In life, there are many things that we want but cannot necessarily have right off the bat. However, we should not be discouraged for two reasons. The first reason is that it may not be in our destiny to have certain things. The second reason being that we can have what we want, but we must wait for the proper time. No matter what the reason, we must understand when and why we have the things we do in our lives. This will help us to see if the things in our lives are helping us or hurting us.
On this note, do not be surprised to find out that the things in which you thought were helping you are actually taking away from you. Most of all, they may be hurting you financially first to later have a negative effect on you psychologically. In this segment, we will speak of why it is important to humble yourself and let some things go in order to actually have more in your life. In this case, we will be talking about giving things up to have more money.
Purpose of a Budget
Doing a budget helps you to see where your money is going. You may really think you know, but do you know exactly how much, and where it is going? You may be surprised to find out that you rarely have any money to spend after your bills are paid. Or, you may not have room in your budget to actually save money. Regardless of what you discover, understanding your money’s monthly forecast helps you to see where it is heading or has been going.
Some other benefits of a budget are:
a) It helps you to organize your expenses
b) It helps you to speak on why you may or may not have money when asked by someone else on your financial situation
c) It enables you to see why you want to get out of debt
Needs versus Wants
To drive home the point of accepting less in your life in order to live better, we will start by deciphering between your needs and your wants. No, these are not the same things. There are things in your life that you cannot live without and things you can. Some of the things you can live without may be a weight in your budget.
Do you: have cable television, a smartphone, gamble, smoke or drink alcohol, perform a hobby that costs money, or give money to your family and friends? Whether you do obtain or participate in these is not so much the matter. The matter is how if you get rid of them in some fashion, you will start saving money.
Sacrificing for Prosperity
When it comes to your cable bill, you do not need all of the extra offered perks such as movie or sports channels. Yes, it is an excellent bonus for your television viewing pleasure. However, are you really watching that many movies, sports, or music videos? If the answer is no, you then see that you can cut some if not all of them away from your cable bill and save money. If the answer is yes, you may need to find a new hobby. Coming home a lot of television may prove you to be a lonely person. Also, you may find yourself eventually starting to spend money at times when you are bored as your life is ran by the television.
Smartphones are cool to have. Therefore, if you own one, use it in a way to bring money in. If you smartphone has a great camera on it, consider taking pictures and making some freelance money to help your budget. If you have a house phone, consider getting rid of it and only having your cell phone. On the other hand, if you do not use data and apps like people do today, you may be able to get rid of your smartphone. By switching to a flip phone, you can save money on data plans.
If you like to gamble or play bingo, let me be the first to admit that it is fun. However, it is not safe. If you kill this hobby, you will immediately experience an immediate rise in your financial situation.
Smoking and drinking alcohol are not good habits. Not only can they cost you money in your budget, but also your life or livelihood. When you give these things up, do not look at it as sacrificing but rather being wise to be more cognizant of not only your money, but your health.
You may like to buy video games, go bowling, or out to eat once a week with friends. Though these things are fun, they could be harming your budget. Therefore, you need to look into some alternatives. You should consider buying used games or borrowing games from others. You should also consider some less costing hobbies such as shooting basketball in your driveway where the only thing you pay for is the basketball goal.
Last but never the least, you may have a giving heart. Therefore, when you get paid, you like to give a little bit to your family and friends. Though it is an awesome and thoughtful idea, I would not make this a habit, especially if you are in debt. First, you do not want the people you have been generous to begin to hold you accountable for giving them things. Next, you want to be able to save money for your future.
As you can see, you may be living the life. However, it may not be the ideal life for you. But, be encouraged as there are alternate things you can do that are just as fun.
